For Businesses
Small businesses are the heart and soul of Port Pirie. In addition to playing such an important role in our local community, small businesses can also do a lot to contribute to creating a better health and wellbeing in the workplace and in the wider community.
Whatever type of small business you operate, there are a number of things you can do to improve the health of yourself, your employees, and the local community. It could be something as simple as implementing barriers that reduce the amount of lead dust that comes into your place of business, or implementing specific strategies to reduce exposure.
TLAP can help your business to undertake a detailed lead exposure assessment, and identify mitigation strategies to help reduce lead exposure.

- Use plastic and tape to cover floors, doors, and windows, and isolate or seal off the work area from the rest of the house
- Close the windows and doors to prevent any lead dust from being spread
- Wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves, coveralls, and face masks

For Gardeners
- Wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves, coveralls, and face masks
- Cover bare soil (particularly if it is in an area where children play), to create a barrier between them and the potentially lead-contaminated dirt
- Keep the garden free of dust and loose soil that can blow around and into people’s homes
- Ensure all garden beds are raised and contain good clean soil
- Water regularly, and spray down paths, roofs, walls, and pergolas to damp down the dust
- Avoid sweeping, dry dusting, or using outdoor blower vacs in outside areas (as these methods can encourage the spread of lead dust)
- Remove or cover sources of lead with a barrier (such as plants, grasses, ground cover, mulch, gravel, pavers, or concrete)
